This is the second year in a row that we have purchased this lot. It's deeply aromatic, with tasting notes of rich chocolate brownie and dark fruits like cherry and raspberry, with a hint of mandarin. Produced by Gizaw Alemayehu in the Alaka Village of the famous Guji region, this lot is a tribute to generations of coffee heritage. Gizaw's father was a coffee farmer in the Yirgacheffe area until the nationalisation of private farms in 1974, which led Gizaw to take a different path. Instead of owning land, he shifted to coffee processing, continuing his father's legacy in a new way, together with his wife Frehiwot. Gizaw’s dedication to his craft ensures that every harvest represents both his family’s legacy and the unique terroir of Guji.
The hand picked heirloom variety coffee is brought to the mill by the neighbouring small holder farmers. The coffee is sorted for quality and processed in the Natural method. The drying process takes 20-30 days, with coffee cherries placed on raised drying beds, turned frequently, and shaded during the hottest part of the day to steady the drying until they achieve the perfect moisture content of 11.5%. Grown at elevations of 1800-2200 meters in volcanic soil, this coffee boasts a rich flavour profile offering a deep, indulgent experience in every cup.
We sourced this coffee through Utopia, who pride themselves on transparency and quality.
